Overview

itopia CloudApps is proud to be a partner with Project Lead the Way, a leader in STEM curriculum for K12 education. As part of this partnership, itopia provides validated images that include all software required for Project Lead the Way pathways.

In this article, we'll review:

Included applications

itopia CloudApps currently supports four PLTW pathways: Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Science, and Gateway. Additional pathways will be supported in future releases.

The table below provides the software available in Labs as part of each pathway.

USB device redirection

Certain applications interact with USB devices such as robotics controllers or 3D printers. itopia currently supports USB device redirection from the local device into a Labs session under certain conditions:

  • The client device must be a Chromebook, ChromeOS device, or MacOS device. Windows clients are not currently supported

  • The client browser must not have any security policies prohibiting USB device redirection

  • Project Lead the Way has not provided a comprehensive compatibility list; however, most common devices should work without issue

USB devices can be connected to the remote Labs session by expanding the Labs Side Panel (the arrow on the center-right of the session, clicking Connect USB Device, and following the browser prompts to connect the desired device.

Application licensing

itopia and Project Lead the Way have pre-licensed most applications available in the PLTW images. However, certain applications (including Autodesk and AGI STK) require schools to use their own licenses. You can specify information for a network license server when creating a new Class, or your users can sign in to applications using their "named user licenses" when they launch their Labs session.

AGI network licensing

Each VM instance created through Labs is ephemeral and isolated from communicating with other devices over the network. For AGI STK to communicate with your license server from Labs, we must satisfy a few requirements.

CloudApps does not support private connectivity to on-premises networks (such as via VPN); therefore, your AGI license server must be accessible from the Internet with a static public IP or a dynamic DNS record that automatically points to the current IP address of your AGI Network License Manager server.

Your perimeter firewall device must be configured to allow traffic from the following IP addresses and TCP ports; these are the IP addresses that Labs sessions use for Internet connectivity.

Rule type

Source(s)

Port(s)

Allow

35.247.99.83/32
34.105.58.65/32
34.136.237.224/32
34.72.27.102/32
34.73.162.139/32
34.73.72.8/32

TCP - Daemon Port (see below)

TCP/27000-27009

When you create a new Class in the CloudApps Admin Dashboard (labs-admin.itopia.com) and select the Project Lead the Way image, you may optionally enter your license server's public address in the format:

[Port]@[IP address or DNS name]

By default, the STKD licensing daemon assigns a dynamic port whenever the license service is started; you can manually specify a static port in your AGI license file by appending 'port=XXXX' to the line that defines DAEMON STKD. For example, to specify port 2081, you can edit your license fille to change the DAEMON line to:

DAEMON STKD port=2081

Save your license file and restart the license service.
