Overview

Domain Allow Lists let you decide which websites students will be able to access during their Labs sessions, and can be set at both a District-wide and an individual School level.

In this article, we'll review:

Domain Allow List basics

itopia Labs blocks most Internet web sites by default. Labs sessions are permitted to access a limited list of sites and addresses to allow basic functionality, such as Google and Microsoft sign-in, as well as application-specific requirements for data access.

Administrators can add custom URLs to the allow list to permit Labs users to access additional sites and resources. These lists can be configured at both the District level and at the School level. Each Labs session will combine its allow list from both the District and the School, and the cumulative allow list will be added to the Default Allow List detailed below.

The Domain Allow List supports the following formats:

  • Domains and subdomains (e.g. itopia.com and labs.itopia.com)

  • Partial or full URL paths (e.g., itopia.com/itopia-labs)

  • Wildcards (although this is equivalent to omitting that portion of the URL; e.g., *.itopia.com and itopia.com/*)

  • Protocol enforcement (e.g., https://itopia.com)

Creating District-wide Domain Allow Lists

1. Log in to the Labs Admin Console as an administrator with Editor or higher privileges for the District you’d like to configure.

2. Find the District Policies tile → click Edit.

Edit domain allow list.png

3. Enter the URLs you want to allow access to.

Tip

URLs can be separated by a comma, semicolon, or by pressing [ENTER].

4. When you’re finished, click Save.

Save domain allow lists.png

Any new Labs that are started will automatically receive the new Allow Lists; sessions that are currently running will need to be restarted.

📝 Note

Domain Allow Lists can be managed District-wide or at the individual School level. Any URLs added to the District-wide policy will propagate down to all existing and future Schools.

Creating individual School Domain Allow Lists

You can add specific URLs or domains to your School’s Domain Allow List using the Labs Admin Console (https://labs-admin.itopia.com).

The Domain Allow List supports the following formats:

  • Domains and subdomains (e.g. itopia.com and labs.itopia.com)

  • Partial or full URL paths (e.g., itopia.com/itopia-labs)

  • Wildcards (although this is equivalent to omitting that portion of the URL; e.g., *.itopia.com and itopia.com/*)

  • Protocol enforcement (e.g., https://itopia.com)

To edit your School’s Domain Allow List:

1. Log in to the Labs Admin Console as an administrator with Editor or higher privileges for the School you’ll be editing.

2. From the district Dashboard, find the Schools tile → click the School you want to configure.

3. Locate the Configuration tile → click Edit.

📝 Note

Domain Allow Lists can be managed District-wide or at the individual School level. Any URLs added to the District-wide policy will propagate down to all existing and future Schools.

5. When you’re finished, click Save.

Any new Lab sessions in the selected School that are started will automatically receive the new Allow Lists; sessions that are currently running will need to be restarted.
